Why do you need a Healthy Homes assessment?
The Healthy Homes Standards are part of the Residential Tenancies Act and became law in July 2019. These regulations set minimum requirements for heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture control, and draught prevention in rental homes across New Zealand.
If you own or manage a rental property, meeting these standards isn’t optional – it’s the law. Depending on the type of tenancy and property, there are specific deadlines you must meet:
- Private rentals must comply within 120 days of any new or renewed tenancy after 1 July 2021, and all private rentals must be fully compliant by 1 July 2025
- Boarding houses needed to comply by 1 July 2021
- Kāinga Ora homes and those managed by Community Housing Providers had a deadline of 1 July 2023
